What is the difference between oscillation and vibration?

Oscillation Vs Vibration | The oscillation is a defined distance covered by movement over its equilibrium position, vibration refers to the physical change caused by the movement of the body.

The oscillation can be seen in the swinging of a pendulum clock and the vibration in the puncture of the guitar string.

What is the Oscillation (Swing) ?

The swing is the movement of a body from its resting place to the maximum distance it can cover on one side to the maximum distance on the other side and back to its resting place.

The maximum distance covered by the body on each side of its resting place is equal to its resting place and is called maximum amplitude or displacement.

The resting point of the body is known as its steady state. The oscillation has a defined period of time, which means that the body takes a definite time to complete an oscillation and will remain the same for all oscillations.

If there is no external force working in the system. It is known as periodic movement and the time needed to complete an oscillation is its frequency.

What is the Vibration?

The vibration of a body is the movement of the body over its middle position and can be linear, circular, periodic or non-periodic.

When an external force is applied to a body, its atoms move from their middle position and due to their bond strength they tend to return to their middle position and due to the momentum they have gained during the movement they tend to travel beyond their position half to the opposite side and this phenomenon continues until the friction exhausts all its energy to stop.

This movement of the atoms causes the vibration of a body and the vibration stops when the atoms stop in the middle position. The application of vibrations is used in all musical instruments that are played by playing strings.

The speakers work due to the vibrant diaphragm and we hear the sound due to the vibration of the eardrums. The vibration that causes noise can be very harmful to us. Mechanical vibration causes rapid wear of machinery parts.

Difference between Oscillation and Vibration

• The oscillation is the definitive displacement of a body in terms of distance or time where the vibration is the movement produced in a body due to the oscillation.

• The oscillation takes place in physical, biological and, often, in our society systems, but vibrations are associated only with mechanical systems.

• The oscillation of a body dissipates energy due to the friction that slows it down and finally ends the movement, but can become a continuous one by applying external force. The vibrations tend to end after the dissipation of all the energy of the atoms.

• The oscillation of a body is used to study the nature of movement and calculations of different energy levels during movement, but vibration has a varied range of applications in the industry.

• The oscillation is a single body where vibration is the result of the collective oscillation of atoms.
